One week to go until Earth Day

Earth Day will take place one week from today on Friday 22 April. Now in its 46th year, Earth Day describes itself as a movement to inspire, challenge ideas, ignite passion and motivate people to action. Earth Day 2016 is of particular significance because symbolically, both Barack Obama, President of the United States and Xi Jinping, President of China, will sign the 2015 Paris climate agreement into law on the day. And with the historic agreement signing, comes the opportunity for global businesses to contribute to keeping global temperature rise below 2°C.

Earth Day 2016

As the Earth Day movement gets closer to its 50th anniversary in 2020, it is undertaking the first of five major targets to combat climate change. The movement plans to plant 7.8 billion trees worldwide, one for every person on the planet. In their bid to make the planet healthier, Earth Day are encouraging their network of supporters to organise and attend events tight around the globe. There is more than a dozen events listed on the UK on the Earth Day website. And it is not just individuals are getting involved, businesses are also using the opportunity to boost their corporate social responsibility. On Thursday, Apple announced that it was going green by donating the sales of 27 popular apps during April to the World Wildlife Fund. Corporate responsibility is just one aspect of business that can be achieved through climate change commitments. Reducing business carbon consumption lowers energy costs and helps to futureproof your business. Whether it is donating to conservation projects, reducing your businesses energy consumption or doing small things like planting trees or replacing physical receipts with digital ones – get behind the Earth Day movement this year.
